How to get your business to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers

More customers now ask AI instead of searching. Eight practical steps to help ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI find your business, trust it and name it.

A customer in Noida needs a caterer for 200 people. Five years ago, they searched Google and scrolled a list of ten links. Today, many of them ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI answer at the top of the page. The AI gives one answer and names two or three businesses.

If your business is not in that answer, the customer never sees you. There is no second page to scroll.

Nobody can force an AI tool to recommend a business. Anyone who promises that is guessing. But AI tools pick names from what they can read about you on the web. You control a large part of that. This guide gives you eight steps, in the order we would do them.

How AI tools decide which businesses to name

You do not need the technical details. Three ideas are enough.

  1. AI tools read the web. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews search the web before they answer many questions. If they cannot read your site, they cannot quote it.
  2. They trust what many sources agree on. Your site says you do wedding catering. Your Google listing says the same. Three directories and twenty reviews agree. That agreement makes the AI more confident to name you.
  3. They prefer clear, direct answers. A page that says "We cater weddings of 50 to 500 guests in Noida and Greater Noida" is easy to quote. A page that says "We deliver excellence in every event" gives the AI nothing to use.

This work has a name: AEO, or answer engine optimization. It shares most of its foundations with ordinary SEO. Good pages and a healthy site help in both places.

Step 1: Ask the AI about your business today

Before you fix anything, see where you stand. It takes 30 minutes.

Write down 10 questions your customers ask. Use their words, not yours. For example:

  • "Best caterer for a wedding in Greater Noida"
  • "Who repairs commercial ACs in Sector 62 Noida?"
  • "Is [your business name] good?"

Ask each question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. Note three things for each answer:

  • Does it name you?
  • Which competitors does it name?
  • Does it say anything wrong about you, such as an old address or a service you stopped?

Keep this list. You will ask the same questions again in a month to see what changed.

Step 2: Complete your Google Business Profile

Google's AI answers lean on Google's own data about local businesses. Your Google Business Profile is the most direct way to give Google that data.

  • Fill in every field: category, services, areas you serve, hours, phone and website.
  • Add real photos of your work, your shop or your team.
  • Write the business description in plain words: what you do, for whom and where.
  • Post an update when something changes, such as new hours or a new service.

Also claim your free listing on Bing Places. Microsoft's Copilot answers from Bing, and a correct Bing listing costs you ten minutes.

Step 3: Use the same name, address and phone everywhere

AI tools compare sources. If one directory says "Sharma Caterers, Sector 18" and another says "Sharma Catering Services, Sector 27", the AI is less sure they are the same business.

Pick one exact version of your business name, address and phone number. Use it on your website, Google, Bing, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, Instagram and any other listing. Fix the old listings you find.

Step 4: Answer your customers' questions on your own website

This step matters most, and most small business websites skip it.

Take the questions from Step 1. Answer each one on your website, in plain words, near the top of a page. For example:

  • A services page that lists each service, who it is for and which areas you cover.
  • A short FAQ with real questions: "Do you cater outside Noida?", "What is the minimum order?", "How far ahead should I book?"
  • If you can share prices or price ranges, share them. "Wedding packages from ₹650 a plate" is something an AI can quote. "Contact us for pricing" is not.

Write one clear answer per question. Put the answer first, then the detail. An AI tool can quote a sentence like that, and a person can scan it in five seconds.

Step 5: Make sure AI tools can read your site

Some websites block AI tools without the owner knowing. A security plugin or an old setting is usually the cause.

Ask your web developer to check three things:

  1. The robots.txt file does not block AI search crawlers. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that lets ChatGPT search show your site. PerplexityBot does the same for Perplexity. Google's AI Overviews use the normal Googlebot.
  2. The important text is real text on the page. Text inside images, or text that loads only after a click, is harder for AI tools to read.
  3. The site is fast and works on a phone. Google checks this for its ordinary results, and its AI answers draw on the same index.

Step 6: Add structured data

Structured data is a small block of code on your pages that labels the facts for machines. It says "this is the business name", "this is the phone number", "these are the opening hours" and "this is a question with its answer".

The common types for a local business are LocalBusiness (or a more exact type, such as Restaurant) and FAQPage. Your developer can add them in an hour or two. Google's free Rich Results Test checks that they work.

You may also hear about llms.txt, a short summary file for AI tools. It is cheap to add, but it is a proposal, and the major AI companies have not said that they use it. Do it after the steps above, not instead of them.

Step 7: Get mentioned beyond your own website

AI tools learn from the whole web, not only your site. They look for other sources that talk about you.

  • Reviews. Ask happy customers for a Google review. Ask them to mention what you did for them, such as "catered our daughter's wedding for 300 guests". Reply to every review, good or bad.
  • Directories. Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and the directories for your trade. Use the same details as Step 3.
  • Local press and blogs. One article in a local news site or a city blog counts for more than many directory listings.
  • Questions and video. Answer questions in your trade on Quora or Reddit, under your real name. Short YouTube videos that show your work also help, because Google's AI answers sometimes cite YouTube videos.

Step 8: Check again every month

AI answers change from week to week. Ask your 10 questions again each month and compare the answers with your first list.

Look for three signs of progress:

  • You appear in answers where you were missing.
  • The AI describes you correctly.
  • The AI quotes your own website, not only directories.

Expect weeks for changes to your own site, and months for reviews and mentions to build. Plan in quarters, not days.

Common questions

Is this different from SEO? SEO gets your page into a list of links. AEO gets your business named inside the answer. Most of the work is the same, so do them together.

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business? No. The answers in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews are not for sale in the way a Google ad is. Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed AI recommendation.

Do I need a big website for this? No. A small website with clear service pages, a real FAQ and correct contact details is enough to start. A clear answer counts for more than the size of the site.

Can I do this myself? Yes. Steps 1 to 4 and Step 7 need no technical skill. Steps 5 and 6 need an hour or two from a web developer.

Start with the 30-minute check

Do Step 1 this week. Ask the AI tools your customers' questions and write down what they say. You will learn more from that list than from any guide.
